mitoYDNA.org is happy to announce a brand new tool available for YDNA kit holders. This Y-STR+ tool will allow you to view and explore all of your YDNA data, including the markers beyond the 111 marker range, for those that have kits with more information, like, for example, those from FTDNA Big-Y tests.
The Y-STR+ tool can be accessed from any YDNA kit page, but its power is in comparing kits together, so the easiest way to explore is to start from the Tools -> Matches area - or - the green Search area at the bottom of the Tools page. Once a set of kits is loaded, you can sort them, select a subset of the data based on marker ranges - or - explore only the markers that have a different value from the reference kit. You can even swap reference kits to view the data from a whole new perspective, with a single click!
For more information, check out the Y-STR+ help page on mitoYDNA.org or view the Y-STR+ Introduction video on the mitoYDNA YouTube channel.

The earliest known ancestor, referred to as EKA, on a genealogical pedigree chart is the ancestor with whom all of your matches and you can trace
back to in that direct line. You may not know their names but they exist. They have to, they had parents. But for us they are the last one for names in our
pedigree list that everyone can connect to.

Shown below is my earliest known ancestor on a Sorensen line, Anders Sorensen. I do not know the first name of his father or his mother. Anders counts because I have a paper trail back to him but Mr. and Mrs. Sorensen, his parents, do not count because we do not have a paper trail for
them. If someone in our matches had a paper trail back to Anders parents, then they could be our EKA’s.

Mags Gaulden explains, “Finding a DNA match who knows their family history can tell you about your family history.” Finding an earliest known ancestor, shared between multiple matches, helps to confirm the genealogical paper trail.

The list below is an alphabetical listing of countries, within their regions, of user reported EKA’s for the DNA kits we have in our database. There are some countries that are defined as being located in two geographic areas such as Russia which is located in both Asia and Europe. It is included in both areas below because there are Earliest Known Ancestors from both the east side and the west side of Russia.
The very first test I did was a mtDNA test. I did it to see if my grandmother really was connected to the family she reconnected with after living for many years in a children's "home". The mtDNA work I did on the line, using the testing company database and a secondary database (available at the time), helped in major ways toward solving the mystery.

My Father is "all in" for my family research and tested next, doing a YDNA test. There are really no mysteries in my father's line, though I did make a discovery - a big one. My Surname is a derivative of the surname Gaulding. I discovered this not on the testing site - had no matches there right after his kit was processed - I discovered it by uploading his results to that secondary site to make discoveries.

In my experience, I needed a secondary (third-party) database in order to make these discoveries.

Since the old secondary database is no longer available? mitoYDNA.org makes the data not available in current DNA testing company databases available. But what is that makes mitoYDNA.org different from them?

First and foremost? The Team

We are community supported in three ways:

Volunteers do everything. From the board over to our IT professionals, genetic genealogists, genealogists.

The community informs what we add to the basic database and tools and analytics.

The community, through donations, keep the lights on.

The first is self-explanatory; we are ALL volunteers. The second? We listen to our users and work to add tools and information and features to help them research using mitoYDNA.org. The third? Again it's self-explanatory. When we were starting we always said to each other "if each user donated just a little bit a month we could keep the proverbial 'lights' on".

Second and third and fourth and fifth...

At the beginning when we were just going live, the owner of another DNA database said to me that we were doing it right, that if they had it to do over that they would do things the way we're doing things. Amazingly they had just used our team mantra "Doing DNA Right" in one of the best compliments we get, not just from them but from others as well.

We are run by a non-profit company, mitoYDNA Ltd., with the oversight of a board who also play a role in the day-to-day work we do. So, not only are we run by a board but our board is on the team, doing work just like the rest of us. Most recent refers to that person being the closest or "most recent" to you in generations.

The diagram on the right helps illustrate who would be the most recent common ancestor between me and my Uncle. My grandparents are my most recent common ancestor with my Uncle. It is not my mother because she isn't my Uncle's ancestor.

It is not my great grandparents because they are not the most recent ancestor.

There are various ways some companies show you your MCRA. Ancestry has "Through-Lines", WikiTree has "Relationship Trails" and FamilySearch has the Family Tree App that shows you people who are close by if they are on your tree on the FamilySearch website. NOTE: These programs offer information contributed by individual users and all lines should be verified with good sourcing.

On the right is the FamilySearch app available during RootsTech. Often, the common ancestor with a Y-DNA match predates the adoption of surnames. Remember that a lot of cultures traditionally used patronymic naming systems until quite recently, with names like O'Brien or Larson or MacGregor that changed every generation depending on the name of one's father. So if Lars Olson had a son Anders, the son's full name would be Anders Larson, not Anders Olson. Now let's say Lars Olsen was the most recent common direct paternal ancestor of your brother and some of his top Y-DNA matches. It's to be expected that you will observe surnames in the direct male descendant lines such as Hanson, Larson, Olson, Knutson, etc., and even names like Soderholm or Vetteland when a descendant branch adopted a surname related to a farm or other location where they lived.

Breaking from the Scandinavian example, in other parts of the world where surnames were recently adopted, often surnames were selected to distinguish individuals by their occupation (like Miller or Smith or Weaver). So, if we look at the descendants of a particular Robin Johnson in England, who lived not so long ago, but before modern surnames were adopted, his male lines might have surnames like Robinson, Johnson, Miller and Washington, reflecting a variety of frozen patronymics, occupations and place names.
As I wait patiently for the results of my recent Y test from
FTDNA, I’ve carved out some time from my schedule over the past week to attend
two webinars on the subject of understanding Y DNA and its application to family
history research. Each of these were free
live webinar sessions, and each have an additional session coming up soon for
which I will include registration links.
I’ll give you my brief take on the webinars, and why I would recommend
attending both.

First Lesson

The first class I attended was given by Vivs Laliberte, who I had the
pleasure of briefly meeting last summer at a genealogy conference held in
Burbank. You may know Vivs as one of the
admins of the popular Genetic Genealogy Tips and Techniques group on
Facebook. His webinar was hosted by the
Utah Genealogical Association. In a
session that lasted just over an hour and a half, Vivs walked us through the
basics of Y-DNA inheritance, all the way through understanding how genetic
distance is calculated, and how we can use Y-DNA data in a surname study to
make predictions about which branches of our paternal trees split off earlier
than others. Vivs’ content was detailed
enough to capture the imagination of a fellow physics major (and made me even
more impatient to get my results), while his delivery and skilled use of
analogies made even the science-dense portions of the training completely
accessible to beginners. Regardless of level
or background, I feel like everyone in attendance came out learning quite a bit
more than when they came in! Vivs’ next
webinar is entitled “How to Choose a Y-DNA Test or Choose Not to Do” and will be
held live, Tuesday, June 23, at 6:00 PM (Mountain Daylight Time; GMT-6). Advanced registration is required, and you
can do so via this link.

Second Lesson

I attended a second webinar last night, Diahan Southard’s “Using
Y-DNA and mtDNA in Your Family History.”
Diahan is the founder of Your DNA Guide, which provides DNA consulting
services, and has recently published a book by the same name. This is the second time I’ve attended one of Diahan’s
courses, the first being a live course at RootsTech 2019 where she introduced
attendees to all the latest DNA analytical tools. Diahan’s webinar took a different approach
from Vivs’, as her focus was on strategic application of Y-DNA as a tool to
solve genealogy problems. She explained
the importance of techniques like targeted testing, and gave some valuable pointers
on interpreting genetic distance, and how to use Y-DNA results in conjunction
with autosomal results to accomplish specific goals. My favorite part of the session was her
conversation on why one may have few or many matches, and why those matches may
or may not share my surname. If you’re
looking for some practical and creative ways to apply Y-DNA techniques to your
family research, this is absolutely the course for you. Fortunately, she is giving a second live
webinar on this same topic tomorrow afternoon, June 4, at 2:00 PM (Eastern
Daylight Time; GMT-4). This course also
requires advanced registration, and you can follow the registration link below.

Tracking family history beyond the mid-1700s in Northern
Ireland is difficult. While everyone in my
branch of the family was aware that the Borlands were ultimately of Scottish ancestry,
attempting to connect our line to a town or village in Scotland had proven futile

Antrim). Ancestry predicted the genetic
distance based on the differences in our STR markers to be approximately 10
generations, giving us a good time-frame of how early the Borlands may have
been in the north of Ireland, consistent with the history of Scottish settlement
of that part of Ireland. History tells
us that after the Irish Rebellion of 1641, many Scots who had come to Ulster as
part of the Scottish army sent to put down the rebellion, settled in and around
the Belfast area after the Irish Confederate Wars. I was able to meet my match in person, and we
sat down at a café in Washington, DC and discussed the earliest known origins

currently living in the village or surrounding areas, I was able to find
evidence where the family had once lived.

encountered both a sign indicating a street named “Borland” and the local mail

was nice to see that traces of my family’s presence had survived so many
centuries later. I concluded my
excursion by hailing a taxi to nearby Galston, where I had opportunity to strike
up conversation with some of the current residents. They shared with me a bit about what it’s

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) caused FTDNA to make the decision to close these two databases – time and money to get each and every person in the former databases up to the new privacy standards was too expensive and time consuming to attempt.

How and why did mitoYDNA get started?

I spoke with FTDNA in 2017 about YSearch and mitoSearch and its future since there were lots of rumors floating around regarding it’s possible closure. margin-right: 0px; width: 460.438px;">
Oh, there are so many reasons why DNA.

DNA is the thread that makes up the fabric of who we are. It is also the tint in our Iris, the gray (what, you aren’t grey yet?) of our hair, the knock of our knees, the recipe of our self. It is also the road map of our ancestry.

I have, according to Doodle my Grandmother, my grandfather Gaulden’s hair and eyes. I can see in the mirror that I have my mother's smile. All of my siblings and I have the same basic build, in varying degrees, of our grandfather TC. One sibling has curly brown hair and resembles, again according to Doodle, Doodle’s mother Allie Compton. The other sibling is some kind of incredible replica of TC. I know that I see my sibling in the face and expressions of my niece. I also see the same niece in the face of a second cousin. All our family traits, everything is inherited and that inheritance is decided by our DNA.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the carrier of our genetic (origins, the study of heredity) information. It is “a chemical consisting of a sequence of hundreds of millions of nucleotides found in the nuclei of cells containing the genetic information about an individual. It is shaped like a double-stranded helix, which consists of two paired DNA molecules and resembles a ladder that has been twisted. The “rungs” of the ladder are made of base pairs, or nucleotides with complementary hydrogen bonding patterns.”[1]

So in the simplest form DNA is hundreds of millions of very small things found in a cell – each cell in our bodies. How these tiny things are set-up is how our body knows how to be. This is the basic thing to know.

We inherit parts of us from our mothers and our fathers. We also inherit parts of us from our grandparents and their parents and their parents and…HOW we inherit it is much harder to explain.

If we all inherited things only from each of our parents then we would all look just like our parents and each of our siblings. But as I discussed above, I don’t look just like my brother or my sister. I don’t look just like my father or my mother. I don’t look just like any of my grandparents. I look just like a random combination of all of, or parts of, different ancestors from the beginning of my family line(s).

So, I can ask my family questions and find out about my family history. I can be told I have my grandfather's eyes…wow, I must have inherited them from him…but who did he inherit them from? Well, no one is alive today to tell me that. No one is alive to tell me who his father was from first-hand experience either. I can go to the Library, County Archives, State or Provincial Archives and the National Archives and find the paper trail. The paper trail may or may not tell me anything further back than what the papers cover, but how can I find out about the rest of the story.

Technically a DNA test won’t tell me who I got my eyes from, but it can tell me that I have blue eyes based on what my DNA test says. A DNA test can also tell me that my mother is my mother (despite how many times my sister told me I was adopted), that my grandmother is my grandmother and that her great, great, grandmother is really her 2xgreatgrandmother. To connect the DNA with the paper trail, to prove that trail, is basically the found holy grail of our family history.

That is why DNA.

mitoYDNAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517783401528403156noreply@blogger.com0
